Reaction is coming in Friday as the Biden administration came down with a decision to restrict new NPR-A oil and gas leases on 13 million of the more than 22 million acres of land on the North Slope owned by the United States federal government and managed by the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management.

ANCHORAGE , Alaska -

“Our constitution says we have to develop our natural resources for the good of all Alaskans, Rep. Tilton said. “So, it’s bad for our economy. It’s bad for our people. Not only that, it’s bad for our national security. It’s just all around a ruling coming from the federal government that is one of over 50 rulings that they’ve had where they’ve shut down Alaska,”

Longtime Alaska oil and gas analyst and journalist Larry Persily said in his view this is not federal overreach, calling the administration’s move “predictable” after previously approving oil drilling for the North Slope’s Willow Project. The oil and gas analyst said he doesn’t think Biden’s decision will impact upcoming legislation regarding reducing royalty rates on new oil production, considering that legislation pertains to Cook Inlet, and the Biden administration decisions impact federal land.
