Service in Jiangxi uses data on single residents to build platform amid drive to boost marriage rate

For single people, dating fatigue is a universal phenomenon. Hours of swiping left can lead to despair at the potential matches in your area. One city in Jiangxi, a province in eastern, reckons that it has come up with a solution for the lovelorn or love-weary: a state-sponsored matchmaking service.

The app is part of a province-wide initiative to boost the marriage rate, which has been falling nationwide for the past decade. In 2021 there were 5.4 marriages per 1,000 people, compared with six in the US. One of the main pillars of the Jiangxi pilot is a campaign against high “bride prices”. In recent years the government has discouraged the traditional practice of a potential groom offering a bride’s family cash before marriage. The country’s civil code prohibits “the exaction of money or gifts in connection with marriage”. But in practice the tradition remains common, especially in rural areas.

Rockhampton maternity ward ‘bursting at the seams’ amid state crisisRockhampton maternity ward ‘bursting at the seams’ amid state crisisSky News host Amanda Stoker says Rockhampton’s maternity ward is “bursting at the seams” as Queensland is suffering a maternity services crisis. Her comments come as this week marks 250 days since Queensland Labor cut off maternity services in Gladstone, which holds a population of 30,000. “When the baby is on the way, you need to travel over 100 kilometres up the Bruce Highway and hope that he or she doesn’t arrive too quickly,” Ms Stoker said. “Of course, in central Queensland most people live much further away either on properties or with other children to care for, and remote locations from extended family means that relocating to Rocky weeks before baby is due just isn’t an option. “Queensland may well be right now the one place in the developed world where the danger to the health of mothers and babies during childbirth is on the rise and that’s pretty appalling.”
