Tested by time and various challenges, Creamline endured perhaps one of its toughest trials in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference, narrowly surviving Galeries Tower, 27-25, 26-28, 29-27, 25-19, to zero in on a Top 3 berth in Pool A at the Philsports Arena on Saturday.
Erica Staunton and Bernadeth Pons supplied the firepower, while setter Kyle Negrito provided the stability. The rest of the team backed them up with a gritty defense that carried the Cool Smashers to a hard-fought win against a team desperately attempting to secure their first victory.
Down 18-23 in the fourth, the Highrisers attempted another comeback. Poised to net a point off a Pons service miscue, the Cool Smashers challenged the call and succeeded, moving them to match point instead. Staunton led the charge with 29 points, surpassing her previous high of 26 against the Farm Fresh Foxies, while Pons delivered a stellar performance with 26 points. Michele Gumabao added nine markers, and the combined efforts of Risa Sato, Lorie Bernardo, Bea de Leon, Pau Soriano and Kyle Negrito contributed an additional 21 points.
"The most important thing is that all the players get to play, so we're back to training," added Meneses. Creamline regrouped and countered with a decisive 12-4 run, clinching the victory and bolstering their drive for a Top 3 finish in their pool.
