Mike Tomlin declared Russell Wilson is in 'pole position' for the Steelers starting QB job over Justin Fields, but what does that mean?

That is not an insufficient explanation from Tomlin. Wilson and Fields are new to the room, but offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is too. So are the three rookie offensive linemen and the plethora of new wide receivers. There is a lot of change to the offense, and having a steady quarterback to look towards in the early portions of the offseason to build chemistry makes sense.
The critical part of that statement is in the first statement. Training camp is when it is time to compete for any starting roles. After three weeks of work in Latrobe, it leads directly into the team’s first preseason game. If Fields is going to compete for the job, he has to see some work with the first team, or there is no competition.
Compare Smith’s statement from a month ago to Tomlin’s four months ago. Is there a lot of difference? No, not really. The messaging puts Wilson as the front-runner and the favorite to win the job. So, it is not hard to picture Wilson winning this job. Wilson and Fields have a unique relationship that spans back to Fields’ days at Ohio State. These are two close players.
