Instead, he returns to another of his favourite genres, the procedural crime drama.
Meanwhile, across town, two octogenarian university professors, Rodney and Emily Harris, are conducting a macabre project to manage their myriad ailments that necessitates a specially-constructed cage in their basement, a wood chipper and a hypodermic needle. Stephen King is very much in cruise mode here. He’s been America’s favourite storyteller for the past 50 years now, and while he is most famous for his horror , he’s also reliably good on character, as is evidenced in the well-observed figures who people this story. In Holly, he creates a jigsaw out of plotlines that travel from the gruesome to the prosaic , while gradually, bite-sized chapter by bite-sized chapter, stitching it all together.
