Saints booked their spot in the next round with a 4-1 win of Valur of Iceland
St Mirren marked their return to European football after 37 years by crushing Icelandic side Valur 4-1. Shaun Rooney got them on their way with a debut first-half goal before second-half strikes from Toyosi Olusanya, Mark O’Hara and Alex Iacovitti sealed the win. The Buddies now face Brann of Norway in the Conference League third qualifying round.
“It shows the level of performance and control, especially given it was our second competitive game and we've got seven changes really from the team that started last year. Boys are finding their feet and looking for fitness and sharpness. It's fantastic at this stage. “We've got good staff that will be obsessive with our detail and obsessive with giving us every opportunity to win this game. We face a tough task now but if we play with that level of performance and control then there’s no reason why we have to be better again to progress.
“The atmosphere in the stadium was brilliant. The fans rallied behind us and that's massive. It shows the club is so together and the fans are enjoying what we're doing.”
