Newspaper headlines: Sterling slumps and Boris Johnson in Scotland
The fall in the pound makes the front of several papers. The Financial Times reports that sterling dipped to its lowest level against the US dollar in 28 months. Markets are"ever more worried" about the UK leaving the EU without a deal, the paper says, and some government ministers"did nothing to dispel" their fears. Currency analysts ING say the pound is likely to remain under pressure"with the rising likelihood of early elections".
Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror has the most surprising Boris Johnson story of the day - summed up by its headline"Boris hires Mirror chicken as adviser." It explains that Lee Cain, newly appointed as No 10's head of communications, is not only a former Daily Mirror reporter but was the man the paper used to send out to political events dressed up in a chicken costume to heckle prominent Tories. Naturally, a picture of the infamous chicken has been dug up and reprinted.
