Steve Carell joins TODAY to talk about “Despicable Me 4” and shares his support for “The Office” spin-off that is in the works. Carrell also talks about his life off-screen and his focus on family.
Aside the supervillain wardrobe and a quasi-Russian accent, Steve Carell might be more like his “Despicable Me” character, Gru, than one might think. Speaking to TODAY.com about the latest film in the franchise, “Despicable Me 4,” the 61-year-old comedian says he finds himself relating to Gru as a father. “I think the things that align with me in terms of Gru are the fact that all he cares about is being a good dad,” Carell says. “And I think that reflects who I am.
“The Office” alum adds that he resembles Gru’s “very playful” side, referencing a moment in the first film when his character dresses up as a ballerina for his daughter’s birthday. Carell shares that he is similarly committed to his kids’ birthday celebrations. 'I tend to try — I go overboard a little bit with my kids' birthdays, especially when they were little.
