Steve Martin declined a role in Saturday Night Live season 50 after Lorne Michaels personally offered it to him. The long-running NBC sketch show is currently gearing up for its return for its fiftieth season, which is set to start on September 28. For season 50, Michaels plans to bring back past cast members and hosts from past decades who helped shape the show. Martin, while never an official cast member, has hosted Saturday Night Live a stunning 16 times since 1976.
However, talking to the Los Angeles Times, Martin revealed that he declined a major role in Saturday Night Live season 50 after Michaels personally offered it to him. The role was Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz and, despite his physical resemblance, Martin declined since he doesn't consider himself a good enough impressionist to play Walz. I wanted to say no and, by the way, he wanted me to say no. I said, "Lorne, I’m not an impressionist. You need someone who can really nail the guy." I was picked because I have gray hair and glasses... It’s ongoing. It’s not like you do it once and get applause and never do it again. Again, they need a real impressionist to do that. They’re gonna find somebody really, really good. I’d be struggling.
