It's now three games without a win for the former Rangers boss with an attendance slump.
Steven Gerrard was used to no and low crowds during Covid as Rangers boss and the empty stands are becoming a familiar feel during his Saudi adventure as his Al-Ettifaq side suffered their second successive defeat.
A crowd of just 696 watched Gerrard’s men go down to Al-Riyadh with Scotland and ex Celtic defender Jack Hendry featuring alongside former Liverpool stars Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum and Demarai Gray. Al-Riyadh aren’t one of the well backed Saudi Pro League sides and Gerrard also saw just 976 supporters turn up for Al-Ettifaq’s 3-1 win at Abha in September. It’s a world way from his playing days at a packed Anfield or even in his first jobs as manager at Rangers - prior to and after Covid - and Aston Villa when he left Ibrox Stadium.
Ex Hoops striker Moussa Dembele didn’t feature in the match but Handy was in the XI as was Sweden international Robin Quaison. Gerrard’s side sit seventh in the table and face ninth placed Al Wehda next. Having drawn against Al-Ahli prior to back to back defeats, Gerrard said: "We didn't show what was required of us. We weren't at the level we'd hope to be at. The opposition's plan was clear to frustrate and wait for the opportunities.
