After directing his breakout thriller Jaws in 1975, Spielberg transitioned into directing one of the most acclaimed sci-fi films of all time: Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He has also directed other science-fiction films including E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, War of the Worlds, and Ready Player One.
Why Steven Spielberg’s Return To Sci-Fi Is a Good Idea In moving away from the more conventional Hollywood drama, Spielberg can restore the freshness in his work. In the last couple of decades, Spielberg has largely pivoted away from sci-fi, action, and other genre-based films. Instead, he has chosen to make a number of dramas, including Schindler’s List, Bridge of Spies, and Lincoln. There are some exceptions to this, including 2018’s Ready Player One, as well as the early 21st century movies A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Minority Report. Still, Spielberg’s modern-day career is largely dominated by period drama.
