Stevie McKenna was beaten by Lee Cutler in Liverpool on Saturday night after being knocked down in the first round before suffering another in the seventh
Stevie McKenna tasted defeat for the first time in his professional career, losing on points to Lee Cutler in a closely contested match in Liverpool on Saturday. Battling it out at the Exhibition Centre, McKenna faced his first majority decision loss after ten tough rounds.
Undefeated in 14 previous pro fights and never having fought past six rounds, the Monaghan boxer was knocked down in the opening round but recovered and put up an impressive fightback with a relentless pace, reports the Irish Mirror. Despite seeming to gain control, McKenna was floored again by a powerful right from Cutler in the seventh round and appeared shaken for the duration of it.READ NEXT: Mark Allen handed win by opponent in bizarre end to game at Scottish Open
Nonetheless, he came out fighting fiercely in the eighth, exerting full effort until the final bell, hoping to best Cutler. The results came close: one judge called it even at 94-94, while the others had Cutler edging it with scores of 95-93 and 96-92. In the aftermath, McKenna said: "It was a very close fight, and I thought I had won it. It could have gone either way." He added: "I trained very hard for this fight, and there are no excuses." Reflecting on the possibility of running it back, he suggested, "Maybe we could do the rematch in the future, maybe in Ireland."
