Stiliyan Petrov would love to see Celtic take on Aston Villa in the Champions League – and would gladly don a half-and-half scarf for the occasion.
The Villains' place in Europe's Premier competition was confirmed when Tottenham went down 2-0 to Manchester City on Tuesday night. It means Unai Emery’s men will return to the top continental stage for the first time in 40 years, since they took part in the old European Cup in season 1982/83 – the season after they were crowned Kings of Europe by winning it.
Celtic will join them if they get the point they need against Kilmarnock to confirm their status as Scottish Premiership champions. The Hoops will go into the newly reformatted "league stage" of the tournament along with Villa. A 36-team table will see each team take on eight others either home or away. First to eighth will go through to the last 16, while ninth to 24th will face off in a two-legged playoff to get there.
And Petrov would love nothing more than to see his two former clubs battle it out on the biggest stage. The Bulgarian admits he would have split loyalties if they were to be paired together. After he congratulated Villa on social media, fans responded talking up a Hoops and Villains "Stan" party and Petrov admitted he would "love that". Another suggested that it would be the "only time a half-and-half scarf would be acceptable," to which Petroc replied "totally agree."
