The lamps, which adorned Trumpington Street and St John's Street, were among 296 lights and lanterns found at an address in Barkway, near Royston, Hertfordshire , on January 11th. An 18-year-old man from Barkway was arrested on suspicion of theft and released on police bail while investigations are ongoing.
Police released images of some of the recovered lamps, hoping to reunite them with their rightful owners.The stolen Cambridge lamps were designed by architect Sir Albert Edward Richardson, who was commissioned to create unique street lighting for the city in 1957. These vertical tubular lanterns, known as Richardson candles, are a distinctive feature of Cambridge city center. Nearly half of the ones installed in the 1950s still stand today, and all are designated as Grade II listed buildings. The thefts occurred between approximately September 13th and October 1st. Historic England described the removal of the lamps as an 'apparent heritage crime,' highlighting their significance as part of Cambridge's architectural heritage.Hertfordshire Police, which uncovered the vast collection of lights and lanterns, believe they were taken from various locations across Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Bedfordshire over the past six months.
