A man stole a fire engine and tools from a firehouse in Connecticut, started a small fire before leading police on a chase after impersonating an officer during traffic stops in Massachusetts.

Police are investigating a bizarre incident involving the theft of a fire department vehicle and several tools from a firehouse in Windsor, Connecticut. The ordeal began around 3:39 a.m. on Saturday when Windsor police officers responded to a burglary report at the Hayden Station Firehouse on Basswood Road. Upon arrival, they discovered that a television had been broken, several tools were missing from a fire truck, and a Windsor Fire Department Ford Expedition had been stolen from the garage.

Adding to the chaos, the perpetrator had also turned on the gas stove, igniting a small fire in the garage. A short while later, Massachusetts State Police received multiple 911 calls reporting a suspicious situation involving a man in a marked Windsor, CT Fire Department vehicle conducting motor vehicle stops on Interstate 91 North in Northampton and Whatley. The man, using the emergency lights, interacted with vehicles during each stop but failed to properly identify himself. Massachusetts State Police issued an alert to local law enforcement to be on the lookout for the vehicle. A trooper soon spotted the vehicle on I-91 in Deerfield and attempted to stop it, but the driver fled briefly before leading police on a pursuit. Troopers and Deerfield, Massachusetts police used stop sticks to finally bring the SUV to a halt near the Deerfield weigh station. Massachusetts State Police apprehended the driver, a 46-year-old man from Windsor, Connecticut, around 5:00 a.m. and learned about his alleged connection to the burglary and fire at the Windsor fire station. The suspect is facing charges in Massachusetts, including receiving stolen property, impersonating a police officer, failure to stop for police, negligent operation, and improper use of emergency lights. While Massachusetts State Police have identified the suspect, Windsor Police have not yet publicly released his name. Detectives are interviewing the man, and he could face additional charges in Windsor depending on the outcome of the investigation. Authorities reported that all Windsor fire apparatus are operational and fire emergency response was not compromised
