Stonehenge tunnel scheme cancelled by government

The Labour government has now cancelled the A303 scheme, which has faced many legal challenges.

The scheme along the A303 in Wiltshire, which was agreed by the previous Conservative government, had faced a number of legal challenges from campaigners.

Planning permission for the scheme, which was backed by Wiltshire Council and involved overhauling eight miles of the major road,However, National Highways said the tunnel would reduce journey times, ease traffic problems and remove the road from the view of the landscape. Campaigner John Adams, from Save Stonehenge World Heritage Site, said: "We think that all the agencies involved should get together and look at other intelligent alternatives.

“Road improvements have been needed for years but delayed in anticipation of the tunnel. The status quo is completely unacceptable,” he added.
