Manchester City defender John Stones' latest injury setback casts doubt on his availability for the crucial Boxing Day match against Everton. Stones was forced off after 45 minutes against Aston Villa, raising concerns about the severity of his injury. Manager Pep Guardiola, while offering no concrete prognosis, hinted at a potential extended absence for Stones.

John Stones ' latest comeback from injury was cut short after just 45 minutes at Aston Villa , potentially leading to another period on the sidelines. Stones was hastily inserted into Manchester City 's starting lineup at Villa Park due to Ruben Dias' injury, but felt a recurrence of his previous problem and had to be substituted.

Pep Guardiola refrained from providing a definitive update on his injured players, but suggested that Stones is unlikely to participate in the Boxing Day clash against Everton. Stones has only featured 12 times this season, with eight starts, and the Everton match would mark his 12th absence. The defender could be sidelined alongside Dias over the Christmas and New Year period, with the Portuguese international expected to be out for at least another three weeks. Stones and Dias have only started one game together throughout the season - the late victory at Wolves. Guardiola also offered an update on goalkeeper Ederson, who missed the Villa defeat, and midfielder Matheus Nunes. He stated: 'I didn’t talk with the doctors but if he could not play the second half at Villa Park it is because he wasn’t ready. We’ll see. “We train this afternoon and will see how many players we have available. At the moment, I don’t know.' Guardiola confirmed that the squad will train late on Christmas Day before staying overnight at the City Football Academy ahead of the 12.30pm kick-off on Boxing Day. “We train today and we train tomorrow night, and then we stay here and then play on Boxing Day,' he said. “Tonight and tomorrow, they will be with their families. Tomorrow night they will be here. Hopefully they want to be here - it is our job.” Rodri and Oscar Bobb remain out, with Bobb hopeful of returning to training in approximately a month's time
