A nutritionist reveals the best way to store carrots to keep them fresh and crunchy for up to a month. Ditch the vegetable drawer and try this simple method.

There's nothing worse than spending money on beautiful fresh produce, only to forget about it once it's been tossed in the fridge drawer; then you find it slimy and stinking weeks later. One of the worst offenders for this is carrots - beautifully crunchy and fresh when bought, but quickly they will turn soft, wrinkled and bendy if you don't store them properly.

The tempting thing to do is toss them in the vegetable drawer - but cook and nutritionist Amanda Rocchio says you should never do this. In a video posted to Tiktok, Rocchio said: 'You've probably been storing your carrots the wrong way, let me show you the right thing to do.' 'Whether you prefer to buy whole carrots or prefer to grab a bag of baby carrots, you're probably tossing them in a fridge drawer.' She said the best way to keep carrots fresh for longer is to store them in water in an airtight container. This method will keep them fresh and crunchy for up to a month. However, make sure that you keep the water fresh by emptying the container and refilling it every couple of days to avoid the carrots going slimy, reports the Express. This trick also works well for celery, another vegetable prone to going off in a forgotten vegetable drawer. The reason vegetables can spoil in the fridge drawer is temperature fluctuation. When you open and close the fridge door, the temperature is constantly rising and falling and the humidity levels are also ever-changing. Carrots are extremely sensitive to changes in humidity, and the vegetable drawer in the fridge is designed to maintain higher humidity levels than the rest of the fridge. If the humidity is too high for carrots, it can lead to them becoming mouldy, while a low humidity will cause them to dehydrate and deteriorate
