Two would-be burglars targeted multiple businesses in Glasgow's east end during Storm Eowyn, causing damage but failing to steal anything.
Police are hunting two would-be burglars who attempted to break into several businesses in Glasgow 's east end while staff were present at their workplaces during the tumultuous weather conditions brought about by Storm Eowyn . The suspects, described as 'low,' targeted Jeanie's Coffee Shop, Hoolit Gifts and Magazine, and school uniform supplier Aspire Academy in Baillieston on Friday, January 24, during a severe red weather warning.
The duo wreaked havoc, damaging doors, shattering glass, and even tearing off sink taps in toilets. Despite their efforts, they were unable to gain entry into any of the three businesses and make off with any valuables. However, the extensive damage forced the businesses to shut down due to the subsequent police investigation, compounding their losses already incurred as a result of the storm. It is believed that there are potentially two female suspects involved.John Devaney, who co-owns Jeanie's with his husband Stephen, revealed that the closures on their 'busiest days' of Friday and Saturday resulted in significant lost revenue. Describing the incident, John stated: 'Our cleaners arrived at 5pm and discovered the doors had been smashed, and the entire place was in a state of disarray. Forensics arrived on Saturday to conduct their investigation. It's left me feeling shaken and now anger is taking over.' Expressing gratitude for the 'support' received by Jeanie's in the aftermath of the incident, the establishment which also serves as a community hub, John added: 'We take immense pride in what we do and we deeply care about the people who visit us.' Carole Waddell, co-owner of Hoolit, shared her sentiment, saying: 'I find this act extremely low. They are exploiting an already challenging situation. I'm both annoyed and furious. Running a small business is difficult enough as it is.' Baillieston councillor Kevin Lalley condemned the incident, stating: 'You have local businesses serving the community. Not only do the businesses suffer, but the community suffers as well.' He emphasized: 'People take pride in Jeanie's, and Jeanie's takes pride in the people.' A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed that they received a report around 6.20pm on Friday, January 24, 2025, about two commercial premises being broken into on Glasgow Road, Baillieston. They added that enquiries are currently ongoing
