Rival parties are attempting to ramp up the pressure on the DUP to end its boycott of devolution
The Stormont Assembly will be recalled later for another seemingly doomed bid to restore powersharing in Northern Ireland.A petition tabled by Sinn Fein gained the requisite 30 MLA signatures to secure a recall of the crisis-hit institutions, which will take place at 12pm.Several previous attempts to reconstitute the Assembly have already failed as the DUP has not supported the election of a speaker at the outset of the sittings.
Negotiations between the UK Government and the EU to resolve differences over the protocol are continuing. The latest recall petition is centred around the cost-of-living crisis, with Sinn Fein's motion calling for a debate on why people in Northern Ireland have not received energy support payments. In his autumn statement, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said all households in Northern Ireland would receive an additional £200 payment, in recognition of the region's dependence on home heating oil.
