The Stormont Brake, a mechanism designed to give the Northern Ireland Assembly a veto over EU laws impacting the region, has been activated for the first time over a new regulation on chemical labelling. Unionist parties, including the DUP, UUP, TUV, and Claire Sugden, have joined forces to trigger the Brake, demanding that the UK Government raise the issue with the EU during discussions through the EU-UK Joint Committee. The regulation's application in Northern Ireland can only proceed if Stormont votes in favour, requiring cross-community consent.

It seems that the gift that keeps on giving just won't stop. Just when we thought we'd seen the last of Brexit for a further four years the other week when Stormont voted to give democratic consent to a number of articles in the Windsor Framework , along comes another surprise. This time, it's the Stormont Brake , which has been pulled for the first time over something as mundane as a new regulation on chemical labelling.

Now, the DUP and UUP have joined forces with the TUV and independent unionist Claire Sugden to pull it for the first time, meaning that should the UK Government agree that the conditions for pulling the brake have been met, they will now have to raise the issue of the regulations application with the EU during discussions through the EU-UK Joint Committee.

To put it into context, it's a bit like getting a new toy for Christmas, only to find out it's broken and needs to be sent back to the manufacturer. In this case, the manufacturer is the EU, which is not exactly known for its speedy customer service.
