From banning conversion therapy to tackling 'Holiday Hunger', these are some of the proposals our MLAs have been working on
Most legislation at Stormont is brought forward by the relevant Minister. However, individual MLAs or Assembly committees can also bring forward a Non-Executive Bill, or as they're more commonly known, a Private Members Bill.
Conversion practices aim to change or suppress an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity and Mr Tennyson argues that they "are inherently harmful and violate the human rights of those subjected to them." Under this new bill, public authorities would have to pay due regard to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities . This means they would need to think carefully about how their decisions, policies, and services support equality, accessibility, and respect for people with disabilities.
This legislation intends to ensure that the NI Executive takes a deliberative, proactive and intentional approach to level the playing field for people from different places and ensure that where you live is not a barrier to success. The consultation on this proposal closes on 16th February and you can have your say by clicking here.
The legislation will reflect on the Hunting with Dogs Act 2023 and Westminster Acts, whilst addressing weaknesses identified in these pieces of legislation. The legislation will also reflect on the review by Lord Bonomy in Scotland, and will include the implementation of similar measures to ensure no future loopholes may be created.
