The first season begins at Hawkins Lab circa 1983, where we see a lab assistant running away from something…otherworldly, but to no avail.
On the other side of town, we meet an elusive young girl rocking a hospital gown and shaved head as she breaks into a burger joint to steal some food. The diner owner calls social services, but Brenner has been monitoring the phone lines and sends in secret agents to capture her. Joyce's desperate search progresses when she discovers that lights are somehow the key to Will making contact. She transforms her living room into a festive ouija board so he can communicate with her, to which Will tells his mum to run because a Demogorgon is tearing through the wall.
As we come to learn, Jane is El, and her powers grant her access to a void that Brenner made her use to spy on people like the Russians. This void also leaves her vulnerable to the powers of the Upside Down, and an encounter with a Demogorgon had caused her to open up the gate in the lab.Hopper finds the kids and reunites them with Joyce. Nancy and Jonathan also turn up after discovering a gate in the woods and encountering a Demogorgon when looking for Barb.
