The public square's new name pays homage to the late MP Sir Tony Lloyd
The new name of Stretford town centre's public square has been chosen following a competition that saw 400 suggestions from locals. The town centre will now be known as 'Lloyd Square' as a tribute to the local politician and Stretford ian, Sir Tony Lloyd .
His decades spanning career and advocacy for social justice, community safety, and workers’ rights earned Sir Tony a knighthood in 2023 before his untimely death in January 2024 at the age of 73. These ideas were then whittled down to three finalists by the Stretford town centre team and a public poll saw over 1,600 votes cast by the Stretford community. Voting took place from a polling station set up within the centre of the Mall, alongside social media polls and via a form on the Stretford town centre website.
"Lloyd Square is a fitting and well-deserved winner of our Naming the Square project. Sir Tony Lloyd’s unwavering commitment to Stretford’s community throughout his career and life is unparalleled and we are so pleased that his legacy lives on in such a meaningful way. “Thank you again to everyone who took part. These are massively exciting times for Stretford and I cannot wait to see the new square when it is completed.”
