The popular BBC dance show will use exclusively faux feathers for costumes beginning in 2025 after an appeal from animal rights organization PETA.

A small change is coming to the next season of Strictly Come Dancing - one that many viewers might not even notice. This summer marked 20 years since the BBC series first came onto our screens. Two decades later, the show has seen various changes, from a mix-up in the presenting pair to a change in the judging panel. Now, another change is set to come into play for the 2025 edition of the dance competition.

After an appeal from animal rights organisation PETA, highlighting how birds suffer for the feather industry, Strictly Come Dancing has confirmed that the show has been “increasingly moving away from real feather use over the last few seasons” and working with faux feathers. Executive producer Sarah James said of the feathers from this season’s costumes: 'It’s unlikely we will reuse them at all going forward.” PETA has requested that the feathers be donated to its feather amnesty campaign. The feathers would be used for educational displays at fashion colleges, eye-catching protests, and more. The activist group’s vice president of corporate projects, Yvonne Taylor, said: “Behind every feather fashion item is a once-living bird who was shocked, slaughtered, and violently plucked for their plumage. “PETA applauds Strictly Come Dancing for putting its best foot forward and quickstepping cruelly obtained feathers off the show. It is excited to see the exclusively faux feather costumes it unveils in 2025.” Yvonne explained how, In their natural habitat, ostriches form strong social bonds, nurture their young for up to three years, and can live for more than 40 years – yet in some instances in the feather industry, workers “forcibly restrain ostriches as young as one year old, electrically stun them, and slit their throats before tearing the feathers from their still-warm bodies”
