Carla Maloco's wedding was nearly overshadowed by a stroke she suffered just before the big day. Despite the challenges, she married her partner, Maureen, and is now raising funds for stroke survivors through Stride for Stroke.
Carla Maloco's wedding day was a whirlwind of emotions, tinged with the lingering fear of a health scare that nearly kept her from walking down the aisle. Just the day before, she suffered a stroke brought on by dangerously high blood pressure, collapsing in her living room and experiencing a terrifying array of symptoms. 'I was retching into a bucket; my left hand was twitching, and my speech was going weird. It was horrible,' she recalled.
Despite the ordeal, Carla managed to marry her partner, Maureen, though the days following the wedding were marked by extreme fatigue and exhaustion.Carla describes the stroke as a life-changing event, stating that she is not the same person she was before. Even simple tasks, like driving her new car for the first time, now fill her with anxiety. 'I get anxious doing things that are not familiar to me,' she explained. The stroke has also impacted her relationship with Maureen, adding a layer of complexity to their newlywed life.Undeterred, Carla has bravely taken on a fundraising initiative called Stride for Stroke, aiming to raise funds for the 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK. This campaign highlights the importance of stroke awareness and prevention. The organization emphasizes that reducing salt intake, regular exercise, and reviewing alcohol consumption are just some of the ways to lower the risk of stroke.
