The Consumer Council's True Cost campaign provides information and resources to help you manage your money better, including budgeting tips, ways to save on utility bills, and information about social tariffs for broadband.

Many of us struggle to make ends meet from time-to-time but, if you are constantly struggling with your finances, it is important to seek advice and guidance early – before debt becomes an issue. The Consumer Council’s True Cost campaign provides information on these sources of help and support whether you are struggling to make ends meet, struggling with existing debt, feel you have no option but to borrow money or if you are worried about illegal money lending.

You can access the True Cost ‘Worried about your finances’ web page here. If your financial situation is a worry, there is help available with budgeting, benefits, housing, debt and other advice to help you manage your money better. Below are some practical tips that may help you.... 1. Create a budget plan Setting and keeping to a fixed budget can help ease financial worries. Knowing how to manage a budget and tracking what you spend is a great first step to starting your savings, getting out of debt or to work towards whatever financial goals you have. The Consumer Council web page on budgeting provides a link to the Money Helper budget planner here You can save your budget and update at a later date if your circumstances change. 2. Save on utility bills Once you have a budget you will have a clear idea of how you are spending your money. It may then be useful to review your outgoings and in particular utility bills. You may identify areas where you can make savings. The Consumer Council website has tools that may help you to save money on your utility bills such as: Electricity price comparison tool here. Gas price comparison tool here. 3. Broadband social tariff If you are in receipt of benefits, special discounted home broadband packages are available. These packages, also known as Social Tariffs, are offered by broadband providers across the UK. To find out more you can visit the Ofcom web page on Social Tariffs here.
