‘I’m a vegetarian, I just assumed I had anaemia or maybe lacking vitamin B12 – I never would have thought it was something so serious.'
Jessica began experiencing extreme dizziness and exhaustion while in her second year at Leeds university
Soon, she needed to sleep for up to 15 hours a day, but, as many of us would, assumed this was just down to an iron deficiency. ‘I’m a vegetarian, I just assumed I had anaemia or maybe lacking vitamin B12 – I never would have thought it was something so serious.‘I went for a blood test and they phoned me the next day to tell me my white blood count was 10 times what it should have been.
After the shock diagnosis, Jessica was told by doctors that she would need to be in hospital for five months while undergoing two rounds of chemotherapy.‘I felt so much frustration because I had to defer uni for the year and I was stuck in a hospital room so I missed out on a lot.’During treatment – which included a stem cell transplant from her own mum – Jess was forced to temporarily quit her studies and couldn’t see anyone besides her mother, who was only allowed to visit for an hour a day.
