The group is calling on the University of Nottingham to end links with certain companies

A group of University of Nottingham students staged a protest outside the vice-chancellor's office calling on the institution to end links with companies including Rolls-Royce. 20 students occupied the ground floor of the Trent Building, blocking entrances to offices of the vice-chancellor and treasurer.

The campaign was organised by the 'Demilitarise UoN' group, which ended up being forcibly removed from a university building following a similar protest last year. The group is demanding that the university ends partnerships with arms manufacturers who they say send weapons to Israel, including BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce.

One of those taking part, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "The University of Nottingham has been shown time and time again to regard its reputation and finances as more important than protecting the human rights of its staff and students, and of people all around the world. We will continue to pressure the University to cut ties with arms manufacturers, and mobilise students to also care about the University’s blatant violation of ethical and moral principles in pursuit of profits.

"The university upholds freedom of speech and we actively encourage our community to share ideas in a spirit of mutual respect and intellectual curiosity. Our priority is, and always will be, to ensure that opportunities to engage in debate or protest are safe, inclusive, dignified, respectful and responsible."
