In looking for new ways to fight breast cancer, scientists from Duke-NUS Medical School have unmasked a surprising role of a protein generally associated with cancer growth. They have discovered that in estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer, this protein acts as a tumor suppressor instead.

They have discovered that in estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer , this protein acts as a tumor suppressor instead.

Dr Lalitha Subramanyan, Study First Author and Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology, Duke University Despite various advances in treatment, breast cancer remains the most diagnosed cancer worldwide and is a leading cause of cancer-related death in women, causing roughly 685,000 deaths in 2020. In Singapore, breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer among women, accounting for almost one in three cancer diagnoses in women, according to the Singapore Cancer Society.
