Universidad Miguel Hernandez de ElcheSep 11 2024 Research ers from the Institute for Neuroscience s , a joint center of the Spanish National Research Council and the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, along with a team from the Transylvanian Institute of Neuroscience , and in collaboration with experts from the Universitat Politècnica de València, have developed an innovative approach to studying brain connections using functional magnetic resonance imaging .

The connection speed between brain regions and integration times are variable, which introduces communication delays. Our objective has been to incorporate these delays into the analysis of functional connectivity to develop a more precise and sensitive method.

Related StoriesTo conduct this study, scientists used fMRI data from rats, non-human primates, humans, and patients with alcohol use disorder. These findings open new avenues for identifying more precise and sensitive brain biomarkers capable of detecting subtle alterations in neuronal networks, which could have significant implications for diagnosing neuropsychiatric diseases.

Neuroscientists explore the intersection of music and memoryNeuroscientists explore the intersection of music and memoryThe soundtrack of this story begins with a vaguely recognizable and pleasant groove. But if I stop writing and just listen for a second, the music reveals itself completely. In Freddie Hubbard's comfortable, lilting trumpet solo over Herbie Hancock's melodic, repetitive piano vamping, I recognize 'Cantaloupe Island.

Neuroscientists uncover serotonin's role in resilienceNeuroscientists uncover serotonin's role in resilienceThe simple act of observing others cope with a traumatic experience can increase our capacity for resilience and prevent the pathological states that can result from it, notably depression. Neuroscientists at UNIL have demonstrated the presence of this 'emotional contagion' in mice, and successfully deciphered its mechanism.
