Rylance has top billing, but Succession's Gerri is the real star in this Irish masterpiececasting for these darkening October nights. Acting royalty Mark Rylance pairs with American actress J Smith-Cameron, best known as the Roy family’s loyal-ish retainer Gerri inWe’re in the tenement slum dwellings of Dublin – designer Rob Howell’s ragged, intricate set is spot-on – and the Irish Civil War rages outside, and occasionally inside, these grimy windows.
The emotional, moral and financial mainstay of the family is Jack’s quietly fearsome wife Juno ; one withering stare from her is enough to send Joxer scarpering. She’s protective of morose adult son Johnny , who lost an arm in the Easter Rising and whose plaintive cry is, “Haven’t I done enough for Ireland?”, and concerned about sharp daughter Mary , who has thrown over her loyal, local boyfriend for someone higher up the social ladder.
Smith-Cameron is splendid in her calm constancy, bringing a liberal helping of Gerri’s steely watchfulness to Juno as she navigates to the limits of a patriarchal society further hemmed in by the all-controlling Catholic Church. Kearns is a terrific find as Mary, allowing emotions to flow across her face with startling clarity. Mary’s saving grace, Kearns makes clear, is that she is her redoubtable mother’s daughter and neither of them have time for paycocking around.
