🔴 Suella Braverman agrees deal to pay France more than £60m to stop small boat Channel crossings ➡️ The deal will be seen as an admission that the Rwanda flights – which have not yet started to operate – will not be enough to resolve the migrant crisis
is the best way to reduce small boats crossing, by making it less attractive to settle in Britain.
The new Anglo-French deal, an enhanced version of previous agreements, will be seen as an admission that the Rwanda flights – which have not yet started to operate – will not be enough to resolve the problem. The UK’s funding for French border patrols will rise to €72m , up from €63m last year. This will enable a 40 per cent increase in the number of officers on duty on the beaches of northern France.
British officials will be allowed to work in French border control rooms for the first time, to help them understand the nature of the problem on the ground. More investment will also go to greater surveillance at French ports to stop asylum seekers breaking in to lorries which are about to cross the Channel, and drones and night vision for the use of individual officers.
The French government will set up “reception and removal centres” where they can send migrants who have been intercepted, while a new taskforce will specifically examine how to reduce the number of Albanian citizens travelling across Europe, sometimes with the help of criminal gangs, and then crossing to the UK.
