Importing an aggressive American-style approach will leave the British right trapped in the wilderness
Some four years ago, Luntz warned a gathering of British politicos: “Don’t let our woke wars divide and define your politics.” Having witnessed how US politics has been riven by brutal divides, he told us not to seek to try and import the US rhetoric and style of politics.
Many of these issues are of vital importance, but so is how exactly we talk about them. Luntz’s warnings about style and tone have clearly not been yielded by some, as we have seen with Suella Braverman’sThe putative Tory leadership contender raised more than one eyebrow with her speech that called for the Conservatives to walk in the footsteps of Reform UK.
Braverman is not the only British politician who has come asunder from focusing too much on an audience across the Atlantic. One of the lowest points of Liz Truss’s post-prime ministerial career so far was her appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference conference where she sought to recast herself as a Make America Great Again populist.
“The paranoid spokesman sees the fate of conspiracy in apocalyptic terms – he trafficks in the birth and death of whole worlds, whole political orders, whole systems of human values,” Hofstadter wrote.
