Indiana State Police are investigating the shooting, which happened around 4 p.m. Wednesday.
SULLIVAN, Ind. — State police are investigating a fatal shooting involving deputies inInvestigators believe two deputies were at the Sullivan home of 54-year-old Cameron Lee Atkins around 3:30 p.m. April 10 to discuss a protective order that had been served to the man earlier in the day.
About 30 minutes later, deputies reported to the sheriff's office that Atkins had pointed a firearm at them and that shots were fired. Atkins was struck by gunfire and died from his injuries. Sullivan County Sheriff Jason Bobbitt requested Indiana State Police detectives to investigate the shooting involving his deputies.Police investigate a fatal shooting involving Sullivan County sheriff's deputies on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.
The protective order was reportedly in regards to a reported domestic violence incident Tuesday between Atkins and a woman. Several police agencies responded to the domestic incident. The deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy, state police said.
