Consumer group Which? analyzed over 8,000 European package holiday bookings, comparing January 2024 departures for August 2024 with January 2025 bookings for August 2025.
The research points to several factors driving this price surge, including high demand, increased energy costs for hotels, and limited airline capacity. While destinations like Spain and Turkey might spring to mind when thinking of package holidays, it's the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria that has witnessed the most dramatic price hikes. The average cost of a seven-day holiday per person has surged by 11.5%, from £1,038 to £1,157. This means couples hoping for a romantic getaway will need to shell out an additional £238, or £119 each. Italy, Portugal, and Cyprus also experienced substantial price increases, with average hikes of 7.4%, 6.8%, and 6.4% respectively. Despite the overall trend of rising prices, there's a glimmer of hope for some travelers. Ibiza, the White Island, saw a 6.4% decrease in package holiday prices, while Tenerife, a popular spot among Britons, experienced a 2% dip. Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel, advises: 'Booking early is almost always the best way to secure the best rates. So, now is the ideal time to lock in those summer holiday prices. Shop around meticulously, and if you're traveling with children, consider going in the last week of the summer holidays. We've found this can often be the most affordable week during peak season.
