Phone scams are on the rise, with some callers posing as Anchorage Police or Alaska Legal Services.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Most of the time, a phone call from the police isn’t good. As Andrea Larson of Wasilla can attest, a phone call from the fake police is even worse.
Larson said that the amount of specific detail coupled with the person’s authoritative demeanor, it was harder than usual to detect the grift. She said it was only after she stood her ground, telling the fraudster she didn’t believe him, that he eventually gave up the act by abruptly ending the call.
“The scammers are getting more sophisticated,” Oistad said. “One of the scams we’ve heard about recently is they will have someone get on the phone with the potential victim who identified themselves as the current APD officer. After having a conversation they say, ‘please stay on the line, I’m going to have you talk to my supervisor now.’ And then a second person will actually get on the phone, identify themselves as a current APD employee and have another conversation with them.
Not knowing if he could fully trust what he was hearing, Latreille asked how he could be certain the call was really coming from APD if it was listed as a private number, at which point the individual called him back from an APD main line to verify. “It was very convincing,” Hanson said. “He gave all the right answers until close to the very end when I went ahead and called the individual they said that they were trying to impersonate … It was pretty scary, but we’re okay. I can easily see other people falling for this.”
