The stakes are always high when a UK Prime Minister and US President meet - so here's what could go wrong 🔎 Analysis by ChaplainChloe
President Biden has been leaning towards a protectionist attitude to trade and domestic policies, particularly around the green agenda. As a result, Mr Sunak could have a difficult time encouraging him to agree to a closer collaboration on future investments.
The strategy for responding to hostile behaviour from China, in particular in relation to Taiwan, is also likely to be discussed. Mr Sunak is seeking to frame the trip as a resetting of the “special relationship” and preparing it for the modern age. He is due to tell US politicians that economic and defence cooperation are crucial for ongoing alliance and countering foreign threats from hostile states.
In an offhand remark at a fundraising event in May, Mr Biden is said to have told guests he had travelled to Northern Ireland to “make sure the Brits didn’t screw around” with the process. The US President was also said to be bewildered by the Westminster chaos last year, triggered by the downfall of Boris Johnson and the short premiership of Liz Truss, and was criticised for not attending the coronation of King Charles in person.
This week’s visit, Mr Sunak hopes, will mark a fresh start. The suggestion of a lack of trust between the two nations is something Mr Sunak will be very keen to put behind him. On his side, Mr Biden has clearly made a point of rolling out the red carpet for Mr Sunak by inviting him to stay in the Presidential grace and favour home, Blair House, which has not been used by a UK PM since David Cameron.
We all remember the incredibly awkward photo of President Donald Trump holding the hand of then Prime Minister Theresa May, apparently guiding her down a slope at the White House and, in the process, obliterating the image she was trying to portray of being firm in the face of his concerning closeness to Vladimir Putin. Mr Sunak knows how to make the most of a photo-op – he will have to hope the President plays ball, and sticks to the script.
