Only 22 Tory MPs ended, despite counting heavyweights among their number including former prime ministers Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, ex-Tory leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith and former home secretary Priti Patel.
After the result, the Tory arch-Brexiteer European Research Group , that hours earlier boasted of 30 MPs at its meeting and predicted Mr Johnson would help boost rebel numbers, was attempting to insist that the number of abstentions showed a third of the party did not back Mr Sunak’s deal. At one point, relative unknown and one of the Tories’ newest MPs Chris Clarkson began to upbraid ERG veteran Sir Bill Cash as he continued to fight the old battles, telling the European Scrutiny Committee chair he was engaged in a “pathological denial of reality” by refusing to acknowledge the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic that has made this deal so fraught.
