The former Prime Minister is expecting to hand over to a caretaker leader of the Conservative party if the contest to replace him lasts into the autumn
The leadership election triggered by Mr Sunak’s decision to quit, which he announced outside No 10 as he left office as Prime Minister, could be as quick as six weeks but there are growing calls to extend the contest toThe timetable will not be determined until a new chairman and executive of the 1922 Committee of Conservative backbenchers are in place, likely to be by the end of next week.
That opens up the prospect of an interim or caretaker leader taking over for the duration of the leadership election. The Conservative party has never previously had such an arrangement, unlike Labour where the deputy leader automatically takes over on an acting basis when the leader resigns. Among the possible contenders, Mr Tugendhat, who was Security Minister until Friday, is seen as having the most well-developed campaign operation so far.
