Mowbray’s position as manager is under growing scrutiny as the club hierarchy assesses a potential manager change.Sunderland’s win over Rotherham was their first of the 2023/24 campaign, with Mowbray starting the season with consecutive losses to Ipswich Town and Preston in the Championship and a penalty shootout defeat to Crewe Alexandra in the League Cup.
Mowbray replaced Alex Neil at the Stadium of Light last summer and led Sunderland to the playoffs during his first season in charge. The Black Cats finished sixth after a dramatic final-day win over Preston in 2022/23, but were knocked out of the playoffs by Luton Town. Sunderland’s Championship campaign resumes next Saturday with a trip to Coventry City, who played out a 1-1 draw with Swansea this weekend.
