A blind taste test of the cheapest own-brand champagnes from major supermarkets to find the best value fizz for your festive celebrations.
For those looking to add a bit of sparkle to their festive celebrations, a bottle of champagne often makes the shopping list. However, if you're considering one of the high-end champagne brands, you could be shelling out anywhere from £40 to over £200 for your bubbles. But fear not, most supermarkets now offer their own brand champagnes, meaning you can get a decent bottle of the fizzy stuff for less than half the price.
With a vast selection of bottles currently on sale, we asked all the major supermarkets for their cheapest own-brand or self-produced champagne. These are the bottles that made it into our taste test - although it's worth noting that some supermarkets provided a more premium bottle as they claimed these were the cheapest own brand they had available. To ensure complete impartiality, I gathered a group of regular fizz drinkers and we conducted a blind taste test of all the bottles. All bottles were concealed and numbered for the initial round of testing. Once the top four were identified, we sampled these again to make sure we could adequately compare the cream of the crop and determine our ultimate winner. Only then was the producer of each bottle revealed to our panel of tasters, reports the Manchester Evening News. It's worth mentioning that we found all the bottles tested here to be drinkable - and we wouldn't be disappointed if any were served at a festive gathering. However, in the taste test, there were certainly some that we'd prefer to drink more of than others. Here are our thoughts on all the bottles we tried, from Aldi, Tesco, Lidl, M&S, Asda, Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Morrison's. Asda's Louvel Fontaine, priced at £9.99 (on offer down from £18) This immediately struck us with its 'ripe' fragrance, which some felt was 'a bit cheesy'. This made it universally unappealing to our tasting panel. Rating: 4/10. Lidl's Comte de Sennaval, priced at £1
