The rations come after shoppers reported having difficulties finding fresh produce over the last few week.
to three on sales of lettuce, salad bags, broccoli, cauliflowers and raspberry punnets, along with tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. Morrisons will limit people to two on cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce and peppers – but other UK supermarkets have not yet announced any limits.Minette Batters, head of the National Farmers' Union , told Sky News:"Everybody wants to avoid rationing effectively, which is what we saw with eggs in December.
She said supermarkets would continue to face challenges in 'getting some food items'. And, although it remains unclear how long the rationing will last, a Tesco store has acknowledged the supply shortage, saying 'cold weather in Spain has impacted the amount of crop availability and resulted in poor quality', adding 'sorry for any inconvenience caused'.
Adverse weather in the south of Europe and northern Africa has disrupted the harvest for some produce, but in winter, the UK imports around 95 per cent of its tomatoes and 90 per cent of its lettuces – mostly from Spain and north Africa. Growers and suppliers in Morocco have dealt with poor weather and cancelled ferries, impacting the volume of fruit reaching Britain, with Spain also 'badly affected'.
The UK receives some produce from domestic growers and the Netherlands, but producers have reported 'cutting back' on their use of greenhouses because of high energy prices. The British Retail Consortium said the disruption would likely last a few weeks – but retailers said limits are temporary until supplies improve in the next days or weeks, helped by the UK moving into its growing season.
