Pressure on Victoria’s public high schools is expected to increase in the next four years, with forecast student growth tipped to outpace the projected supply of teachers.
The number of secondary students will outpace the number of teachers over the next four years, modelling shows.
Bayswater Secondary College principal Elizabeth Swan has a complete roster of staff for her 180 students, but she knows of other schools that aren’t so lucky.If the government fails to entice and retain more teachers, that could create a shortfall of hundreds. “The risk of not having subject-specific teachers is that the schools’ ability to offer VCE subjects is limited,” he said.
Australian Education Union Victorian Branch president Meredith Peace said the report did not reflect the current crisis and showed the Andrews government had dropped the ball on action needed to fix the chronic teacher supply problems. The report showed schools were particularly struggling to recruit teachers for priority subjects like digital technology and STEM.
