Gov. Mike Dunleavy signed into law Tuesday a piece of legislation designed to increase renewable energy options, lower utility costs for Alaskans, and reduce the state’s dependence on natural gas through a system known as “net metering.”

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -

Wielechowski said with 20 states already having formal community energy programs, utility customers participating in community energy projects typically save between 5% and 15% on their utility bills through monthly credits. “We currently have net metering in the state of Alaska. It was created by the regulatory commission of Alaska regulations, but it requires on-site or this, the on-site wind or solar generator to be tied to a single electric meter,” Wielechowski said. “This leaves many residents and businesses unable to use net metering, especially renters, condo owners, property owners without good wind or solar access.

Wielechowski said the new law aims to increase renewable energy on the rail belt by 8%, which could help offset natural gas usage from Cook Inlet Gas supply.
