EXCLUSIVE: Suranne Jones rules out Strictly as she ‘couldn’t handle the pressure’
After years of starring in gritty, hard-hitting dramas, Suranne Jones is thrilled she’s finally made a TV show her six-year-old son can enjoy – even if she does happen to be playing "a mean old bag”.
In Christmas Carole – a modern twist on the Charles Dickens classic – Suranne plays the title role of Carole Mackay, a greedy, helmet-haired businesswoman who’s made her fortune selling cheap festive tat at a huge mark-up. The irony is, mean-spirited Carole absolutely loathes Christmas. While it might sound a little hectic, the festive period gives hard-working Suranne the perfect opportunity to spend some precious downtime with her family.
However, while she may not be big on gifting, Suranne, who hasn’t revealed the name of her son, is a stickler for certain Yuletide traditions. Despite playing leading roles in some of the UK’s most highly acclaimed dramas – including the recent International Emmy Award-winning Vigil – Suranne is no snob when it comes to holiday viewing.
During one surreal scene, Carole runs into the ghosts of Christmas past, none other than comedy legends Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise – played by Jonty Stephens and Ian Ashpitel. The storyline couldn’t be more fitting, as Suranne and her hubby are huge fans of the duo.
