The NSPCC reports a 19% increase in domestic abuse concerns from children in the first six months of 2024/25.

A charity has reported a surge in concerns being raised over children experiencing domestic abuse, and warns that reports could increase over the festive period. The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children ( NSPCC ) helpline was contacted almost 4,000 times in the first six months of the 2024/25 period, which is 19 per cent more than the same period last year.

Of the 3,879 reports received, more than 1,200 mentioned coercive or controlling behaviour, while over 1,400 mentioned emotional domestic abuse. The charity is also reminding all children about the Childline service, which is ready to support them about domestic abuse or any other issues. Annie, from Nottinghamshire, experienced domestic abuse as a child from the age of ten. She shared: 'It always began with a glass of wine over Christmas lunch. 'Dad only drank at Christmas, and each sip seemed to fuel his anger and belligerence. The fear would flood my mother's face as he began to bait her, his fists soon raining down on the nearest of us four children. 'Our snivels and sobs became the backdrop to the shattered holiday, with my mother sobbing beside us.' She added: 'One year on Christmas day, we were made to unwrap and rewrap all our carefully chosen gifts from jumble sales simply because we had wrapped them with too much ‘disrespect’. 'Once we ran away from home, we never spent Christmas with our parents again. Even spending it on our own was better than our family Christmas.' The NSPCC’s Domestic Abuse, Recovering Together (DART) programme is here to support children to recover from the adverse effects of domestic abuse. The service uses group sessions to bring mothers and children together to discuss their experiences, strengthen their relationships and explore strategies for coping with and recovering from the trauma. In the same six-month period for 2024/25, Childline delivered more than 500 counselling sessions on domestic abus
