Earlier this week, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy suggested adding his office’s trademark warning to social media products. The warning would specifically warn about the effects of social media on children and their mental health. The research is ongoing, but Dr. Murthy has seen enough to know that the precipitous rises in teen anxiety and depression are at least partially, if not mostly, linked to social media use. I think parents have seen enough, too.
A Surgeon General’s warning would draw yet another parallel between social media platforms and big tobacco. Both are knowingly peddling addictive products, taking every opportunity to increase user dependence and hiding the destructive side effects. A warning is the least we can do.
