Deputy Liberal leader Sussan Ley has been forced to clarify the Coalition’s position on constitutional recognition as she accuses the Prime Minister of using the Voice to gain a “political advantage”.
Mr Albanese warned that a No vote at the referendum for the Voice to Parliament would scupper any future efforts to recognise indigenous Australians in the constitution.
Speaking to Ms Ley, Sky News Australia Political Editor Andrew Clennell said it was “not the cleanest narrative in the world”. Ms Ley steadfastly disagreed and said the government had not adequately explained its “full narrative” and how constitutional enshrinement of the Voice could lead to legal deadlock in the high court.
She also hit out at the Prime Minister for walking back his previous statements advocating for “voice, treaty, truth” as outlined in the 2017 Uluru Statement from the Heart. Mr Albanese warned Australians against repeating the mistakes of the 1999 republic referendum where some voted no in anticipation of another vote on a different model.
