In the Golden Heart Community, the Fairbanks Soil and Water Conservation District runs a composting program.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Most households see food waste throughout the week, whether it’s an unfinished meal or expired food straight out of the fridge, much of which usually ends up in the trash.

According to Liz Kempton, Compost Program Coordinator with Fairbanks Soil and Water, “Compost takes up a third of the space of the initial products, so not only are you saving space, it’s not going in the landfill.” Composting involves taking food and other waste and creating something to add to gardening soil to make it richer. “Compost is not quite a fertilizer, but it’s a good organic soil amendment, which means that it’s adding organic matter, soil structure, water holding capacity, and it makes nutrients more available to plants,” explained Kempton.
